First fully integrated industrial biorefinery for brown seaweeds
The PROTEUS consortium seeks to launch the first fully integrated industrial biorefinery for brown seaweeds in Norway. This project aims to transform sustainable bio-based ingredient production, supporting environmental goals and European climate objectives.
Project key highlights:
- Innovative Biorefinery Technology: Uses state-of-the-art technology to maximise biomass utilisation from 15% up to 100% without harmful chemicals.
- Sustainable Practices: Focuses on eco-friendly harvesting, optimised resource use, and significant greenhouse gas reductions.
- Collaborative Effort: Funded by the Circular Bio-Based Europe Joint Undertaking and its members, bringing together 11 key partners to scale bio-based product impact across industries.
CLIC Innovation is a part of the consortium
CLIC Innovation is part of the consortium and work package leader for commercialization strategy and exploitation. The target for the work package is to
- Ensure the successful market uptake and replication of the PROTEUS biorefinery concept across Europe, while achieving commercialization of the bio-based products derived from this process.
- Implement strategies to protect and commercially exploit the foreground knowledge generated during PROTEUS.
- Design an Exploitation and Market Launch Plan for the seaweed biorefinery and its products, including the definition of corresponding Business Models.
- Develop commercial scenarios and value chains for the technologies developed.
The project kicked of on 1 May 2024 and will last 4 years. Read more about project from the official press release.
