4R: An open innovation ecosystem for solving the systemic plastic challenge
4R focuses on three spearheads with the highest potential to drive circularity, economic growth, and resilience: circular packaging, technical plastics & composites and textiles.
Since 2019, the 4R ecosystem has served as an open innovation platform that transforms systemic plastics challenges into growth opportunities for Finland. It accelerates high-impact RDI initiatives enabling circular and bio-based solutions across industries.
By uniting companies, research organisations, capital, civil society and public actors, 4R co-develops scalable technologies, sustainable materials, and regenerative business models that:
- Replace fossil-based plastics in multiple end-uses with renewable and circular alternatives
- Extend plastic circulation and life cycles
- Reduce environmental impacts
Through systemic collaboration and piloting, the ecosystem drives industrial transformation in line with Finland’s circular economy goals and EU green transition policies creating competitiveness, resilience, and future growth.
