Value4Pack food packaging project is reaching it’s final stage after successful final event. We are publishing some key take-aways for food packaging industry. Here is a summary findings for EU level policy measurement and key activities needed for food packaging.

EU Policy Recommendations for Circular Food Packaging: Key Takeaways from Value4Pack

🌍 To build a resilient, circular food packaging value chain across Europe, the Value4Pack project highlights these EU-level actions:

Raise Awareness: Long-term, measurable campaigns—especially in schools and youth programs—are essential for behaviour change. Gamification and digital tools boost engagement.

Standardise & Simplify: Harmonised pictograms, clear sorting rules, and digital labelling (QR codes) reduce confusion and contamination. Align national systems with upcoming EU standards.

Scale Reuse: Reuse works when logistics and hygiene infrastructure are in place. Certified washing facilities and digital traceability (QR, RFID) are key. Public sector leadership and cross-border deposit–return systems help mainstream reuse.

Boost Innovation: Support clusters and R&D platforms so SMEs can access and scale sustainable packaging solutions. Flexible public funding and strong links to research institutions are vital.

Invest in Infrastructure: Expand advanced recycling and deposit–return systems, prioritise food-contact-safe recyclates, and combine capacity expansion with quality monitoring.

Enable & Monitor: Mobilise EU funds, strengthen interregional cooperation, and set up EU-wide monitoring systems. Technical assistance for SMEs and citizen engagement campaigns ensure no region is left behind.

Together, these steps accelerate Europe’s transition to circular packaging—making prevention, reuse, and recycling the norm everywhere.
