SuperBark in CBE JU competition.

CLIC-developed SuperBark video wins award in CBE JU competition

A video developed by CLIC Innovation for the €4.5 million SuperBark project, funded by the Circular Bio-Based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBEJU), has received an award in the 2025 CBE JU Photo and Video Competition, gaining recognition for its work to advance bio-based innovation in Europe.

SuperBark is a four-year project focused on developing bio-based adhesives and coatings from natural compounds found in softwood bark. By replacing fossil-based chemicals commonly used in these materials, the project aims to improve the sustainability and safety of adhesives and coatings used in wood panels and paper packaging.

SuperBark CBEScaleUp Competition Winner: Scaling Biobased Adhesives and Coatings from Softwood Bark

The winners of the 2025 competition were announced during the CBE JU Stakeholder Forum on 24 March 2026. This year’s competition highlighted how Europe’s circular bioeconomy is creating real benefits for businesses, communities and the environment. Under the hashtag #CBEScaleUp, participants were invited to showcase bio-based innovation in action — from pilot-scale testing to commercial production, from laboratory breakthroughs to market-ready solutions, and from local biomass resources to new circular value chains.

The 2025 edition drew its highest participation yet, with more than 300 submissions from 50 projects across five categories: Scaling Innovation, People and Skills, Circular Europe, Creative Focus and Video Stories. All winning entries were displayed at the Stakeholder Forum, where industry leaders, policymakers and innovators came together to discuss the future of Europe’s bioeconomy and competitiveness.

About SuperBark

Launched in September 2023, SuperBark is transforming softwood bark, a major side stream of the forest industry, into high-performance, safer and more sustainable adhesives and coatings for wood products and paper packaging. The project is coordinated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd and brings together 12 partners from eight European countries, including four industrial partners, six research and technology organisations, and one small and medium-sized enterprise.

The award-winning video was developed by CLIC Innovation, which leads the project’s Communications, Dissemination and Exploitation work package, in collaboration with project partners and Photino Science Communications. CLIC brings expertise in creating science communication materials for complex research and development topics across the bioeconomy, circular economy and future energy systems.

The recognition helps raise the profile of SuperBark and supports its goal of increasing awareness of bio-based adhesives and coatings among scientists, policymakers, industry stakeholders and the wider public. The project’s results are especially relevant for sectors including furniture, construction, transport and packaging.
