Future Energy Systems

Energy systems in Europe are in a process of a profound transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy. However, sustainability is not the only target – other important objectives are the affordability of energy and the security of supply. In other words, there are needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ensure energy prices which enable competitive industry and welfare for citizens, and ensure energy security.

What challenges and solutions define future energy systems?

Massive use of clean – most often renewable – energy sources for electricity generation will enable extensive electrification and the development towards a carbon-neutral energy system. Sector integration, i.e., integration of the energy carriers (electricity, gaseous fuels, liquid fuels, heat) utilising efficient conversion technologies, side streams, and various types of energy storages, is the cornerstone of this development. The integration of other energy vectors and storages provide necessary flexibility to the power system.

In addition to the energy system, these technologies also support the decarbonisation of the industry, transport, and building stock. Moreover, they provide new business opportunities based on e.g. derivatives of H2 and CO2.

What does CLIC Innovation’s Future Energy Systems theme focus on?

Finland is among the global frontrunners in energy system development, supported by close collaboration between companies, universities, and public actors. CLIC Innovation strengthens this collaboration by building public–private partnerships and coordinating joint research and development efforts.

CLIC Innovation’s Energy theme focuses on developing and demonstrating flexible and resilient energy systems. The project portfolio covers academic research, applied R&D, and demonstration projects, with an emphasis on solutions that can be scaled and replicated. The work addresses:

  • Sector integration, energy conversion processes, and energy storages
  • Resource efficient energy system
  • Solutions for widely electrified society
  • Resilience of energy systems
  • Regulation, market models, and services in evolving energy markets

Energy Strategy and Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) guides the work

This work is guided by CLIC Innovation’s Energy Strategy and Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA). The latest  update was published in 2025. The original SRIA was published in 2019 and updated in 2022 to reflect changes in energy markets and advances in energy technologies.

Join the Future Energy Systems cluster

By joining CLIC Innovation, your organization becomes part of a collaboration platform focused on developing and scaling next-generation energy solutions. Cluster members work together with companies, research organizations, and public actors to shape RDI project portfolios, gain early insight into emerging opportunities, and access expertise, networks, and funding pathways related to the energy transition.
